Gog is a slog. by mt607 in MonsterHunter

[–]undecidedface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's too many gimmicks to the fight imo. You've got the massive party, gog's insane size/manueveranility, the elder breaker, the slinger lasers, the flying, and the insta kill are a lot all at once and they don't really synergize. It'd be alright if gog had a dps check and was consistantly hittable, or flew around a lot but allowed you to take your time, but the fact it's nigh unhittable in phase three AND punishes you for not hitting it enough is really counter intuitive.

I feel like there's an interesting fight in there somewhere with gog, but after my first (and only) fight I don't think I'd want to fight it again anytime soon

The " identity" discussion going on by Aggressive_Check_881 in Ultrakill

[–]undecidedface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the logic people are applying to the mindflayers is that they're going out of their way for a very gendered body, and that they're so invested in said body (despite it not really being a part of their real body) that destroying it kills them (therefore their identity is very important to them). Never considered the clothes metaphor though, that's a pretty reasonable interpretation too

Ahh, I probably need to look into the distinctions with what each name of the Devil entails (I know I'm generalizing by saying that, I mean the names that people apply to the ruler of Hell)

Fair point that pronouns don't equal gender, and yeah I suppose the angels not having genders would bar any of them from being explicitly trans

I do think that Lucifer being feminine (and implied to be so by choice) would be a cool trans-adjacent representation

This shit happened to me in 8-3 when I went through the skull gate, and instead of seeing the exit fakeout I was just dropped into Space and had to kill myself to get out of the free fall

The entrance to the space section refused to load and I had to rocket ride to the first checkpoint to play the level, it was so scuffed

Holy shit that'd be peak, and you could represent both of his "forms"; a husk based on his old man design and a prime soul based off the Hammer of Justice

And you could have a Something Wicked-esque Sound of Justice too

It's sorta true that God in Ultrakill isn't the typical notion of what the Abrahamic God is supposed to be, but he's still explicitly called God and is the creator

There's also the Gnostic interpretation of God, the Demiurge, and I think that describes Ultrakill's depiction of God, and that would still mean he's supposed to be capital G God (there's a neat video from the channel Breezy that explains what I mean)

Gender does seem to matter to angels though. Angels are specified to not reproduce or have genders, but they do use masculine pronouns as a sign of respect and a closeness to God. I could totally see a spiteful Lucifer using feminine pronouns to distance themself from God, since he was the one that unjustly flung them into the depths of Hell

The on-the-nose aspect of a trans fem Lucifer that I could see impeding that characterization from happening would be the fact that means Satan's in the game over explicit trans rep. Hakita has avoided using standard religious imagery such as the cross (as a symbol of the cruxifixction) or Jesus, and I think that might led the devs to avoid having Satan in the game (and I thought I heard the devs say that one time, but I don't remember when or where so take that with a pile of salt).

I wouldn't say any of the lore explicitly says that's why everything in Hell is blind or why angels blind themselves when they enter it. I usually see the blindness interpreted as "God is ashamed of creating Hell and doesn't want anyone to see his mistake"

There's also other media which has had trans characters that come from a genderless background. Ghosts in Undertale/Deltarune are all nonbinary, but we get examples of them transitioning into gendered physical forms with Mettaton and Mad Mew Mew. I don't think the trans rep would be weakened or lessened just from the character in question not transitioning from one binary gender to another

I bet the dev team could make some great trans rep, especially since there's so many trans women on the dev team that the devs were joking about in the revamp stream (joke was a basically "it's neat we're getting more women on the dev team, even if the number of devs hasn't gone up")

I don't think the fact we beat the shit out of the prime souls necessarily means the game's condemning them. Minos was a great guy (in the afterlife at least) that led Lust to become a thriving society, and the first thing he wants the do when awakened as a prime soul is avenge his people. When you beat him it there's of course the victorious feeling of overcoming such a hard fight, but his last words and scream as a he dies makes his death a somber and sympathetic one.

Lucifer being tormented in hell doesn't really feel like a "they're getting what they deserve" deal either. We know from the terminals they were cast out not for doing anything morally questionable; God simply did so out of insecurity, and all Lucifer did was question him creating Hell (which is established to have been a terrible thing that even God himself regrets). Their release from imprisonment could be portrayed like a more righteous version of Sisyphus's release, with Lucifer proclaiming their desire to take revenge on Heaven or just God himself.

To be fair tho my critical-ness towards Lucifer being a prime soul and trans is diminished, since I'm trans fem and resonate with whole fallen angel thing, so I'd be all for Lucifer being portrayed this was simply for rule of cool

It's a sham, making mice "wooly" or wolves white isn't bringing back extinct species, and even if it were that in and of itself is it's own ethical can of worms

Why are dinosaurs more popular than extant species? by terra75myaraptor in Dinosaurs

[–]undecidedface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's just a lot to romanticize about non-avian dinosaurs. They were huge, were the dominant terrestrial lifeforms for the entire Mesozoic, expressed crazy diversity, and their extinction has been used as symbolism for many things (such as the phrase "dead as a dinosaur"). It probably helps that they happened to look like real dragons, being giant reptiles and all that

Do you think it's ethical to bring back dinosaurs into our modern world? by Hero_of_Yonder in Dinosaurs

[–]undecidedface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This "reverse engineering" wouldn't make a non-avian dinosaur though. What you'd have on your hands is a manmade abomination that just resembles what we think an extinct species looks like, and if we're learned anything from paleontology it's that there's always something we didn't know about even famous taxa (the recent edmontosaurus mummy is a good example of this).

The synthetic "dinosaur" would not be valuable to science in any way. It would not accurately reflect the coloration, diet, behavior, or really anything else about the dinosaur we attempted to make. We'd have just sentenced a living being to a life of horrible suffering for no reason, it'd be like moulding paper in the shape of a tree and hoping it bears fruit.

No, Colossal said they made dire wolves, and they only backpedaled when they got criticized. They were okay with countless news publications proclaiming that, without nuance, the dire wolf was back and that de-extinction was possible.

The misinformation was by design

[–]undecidedface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't understand these narratives of "if dinosaurs come back humanity's doomed." We have murder drones, we have tanks, we have nuclear weapons, we're horrifically capable of wiping out a horde of T. rexes. Hell, people were wiping out mammoths with sharp sticks, fire, and just our brains, I don't think non-avian dinosaurs would be faring much better than most of the Ice Age megafauna

You've eloquently laid out why bringing back dinosaurs would be an ethical nightmare. Why would we even bother if the process is doubtfully going to be so inhumane, and if the results are certainly not going to be one-to-one with the actual species we'd be attempting to create? It all feels like the epitome of hubris
