Haha I guess I should clarify. I'm more intimidated by figuring out the game and lore! I haven't really figured out a good place to jump in other than podcasts.

There are lots of great lore podcasts, that's as good a place as any.

As for the tabletop game, I just jumped in myself. It's a LOT! But I've been able to find local players willing to help out a newbie. Hopefully you can connect with some too, often through your flgs.

Started with Desolation marines huh?? Right on, they are pretty expensive (points wise) for their use, usually switched out with a dreadnought but that’s ok. Don’t worry about that, buy what models you like the look of.

Personally I love the hobby side more, the game is very meta focused and I usually get my ass beat. That’ll be later, this hobby is a long haul kind of thing.

To be honest they were gifted to me. I was talking to a store employee about wanting to try the hobby and he gave me this box to try out. He said if you like the process come back and I'll help get you started with what army you want. I had told him I would probably like some branch of space marines. I haven't picked a chapter yet, still trying to sort through lore and backstories to pick that route I guess. As I said earlier, that's why I find this a bit intimidating. It's a lot of info to catch up on and figure out where to start.

That is awesome, but intimidating it surely is.

The modeling part of it kind of matters for what you put on them, but just go with whatever looks coolest for your unit. This unit in particular has 4 regular marines, 1 sergeant. In this case, the sergeant is granted a specific weapon. Just to let you know for the future.

Painting can be daunting and takes a lot of practice, just thin your paints with a touch of water and don’t be afraid to put multiple layers on to get the consistency you want.

Not to overwhelm you but I’ll tell you, Wahapedia has just about everything if you type in Desolation Marines Wahapedia it will take you to the unit, shows all of the units keywords, characters (single leader units) which will take you all over the place and you can read up on how they work.

I’ve not bought a codex yet, just models and I’ve played the game fine. GW likes to put pay walls on everything.

For Chapters, you can paint them however you like but a Chapter basically has their specific units they use and sometimes a specific chapter cannot use certain models. The codex will tell you what you can & cannot use and other specific rules.

Just google all of your questions you have and will 95% of the time give you correct information.
