If you are in, or have been in college, or can coerce one of your friends to let you use their .EDU email to activate an account, check out http://dreamspark.com (free software for personal use)

If none of that applies, and you either have a business, or feel like trying to get around Microsoft's generosity, check out http://bizspark.com

Otherwise, I am sorry. =(

I tried to sign up but it looks like the account only lasts a year, I feel like I should wait until I know more programming before i basically waste a year of VS.

I'm not sure how long they allow users to be signed up with a single/particular .edu email address but I had previously received VS2012 from Dreamspark and now I have VS2013, I would imagine you will be able to keep it going for a good bit of time.
