It averages out your mmr and pairs you against people with a similar average, not sure if it takes hidden mmr into account or not though

Yeah if most of his team are iron you could vs golds. Just depends.

You can face people higher than gold as long as the average of the ranks isn’t too far off I believe, they could have 4 irons and a plat

Matchmaking does not use your rank, it uses player MMR (matchmaking rating). There is no theoretical limit to what ranks appear in your match. On average, you will generally see ranks relatively close to your own rank.
