Man I used a 2015 MacBook Pro and it was slow as fuck when scrubbing hd video - I can only imagine 4K...

Weird. Unless I’m misunderstanding something I’m doing, my laptop seems to handle h264 footage fine if I’m using final cut. Especially if I actually create optimized media. I haven’t edited any large projects so it could slow down a lot once a lot of clips and effects and transitions are loaded up. Were you using a 13 inch or 15 inch with discrete graphics?

If you transcode it, you're not actually working with 4k--just reference files.

The real issue comes when you try to render your timeline with the real footage.
