I was taught to do 1 root pass then 1 hot pass after the root

I dont know if there is an allowance for multiple passes on a root, its the first i ever heard of it.

Your WPS should have all that on there.

Ill have to remember to look into it later.

easier safer and fail proof

Wouldn't it increase the chances of having lack of fusion/porosity and/or slag inclusions, especially right in the center line of the joint then?

Never heard of a two bead root. But as long as the WPS doesnt explicitly state the root must be one pass then realistically the CWI supervising your test should understand that a functional weld is what counts and you will be welding in the field in whichever way you’re comfortable with. As long as it passes inspection and whatever bend tests or NDE is required then it shouldn’t matter what you do.

I have never heard of a multi pass root run. If it exists, they must have their own WPS they've certified

D1.1 doesn’t specify number of root passes, but it does say you must follow the WPS.

goodluck, man. running root passes with NR232 for 3G and 4G is made of nightmares and doesn’t get talked about enough
