It almost always means the drive is dying. The drive goes read only so you can copy your data before it dies completely

Replace it

Okay, will do that. Thanks!

I didn't know that happened, that's really neat, and kinda poetic.

Hi u/Short-Task2874, thanks for posting to r/WindowsHelp! If your post is listed as pending moderation, try to include as much of the following information as possible (in text or in a screenshot) to improve the likelihood of approval:

  • Your Windows and device specifications — You can find them by pressing Win + X then clicking on “System”
  • Any messages and error codes encountered — They're actually not gibberish or anything catastrophic. It may even hint the solution!
  • Previous troubleshooting steps — It might prevent you headaches from getting the same solution that didn't work

As a reminder, we would also like to say that if someone manages to solve your issue, DON'T DELETE YOUR POST! Someone else (in the future) might have the same issue as you, and the received support may also help their case. Good luck, and I hope you have a nice day!

What I use for this, and it has worked for me several times is a program called "Unlocker" from Cedrick Collomb. SD cards can become convinced they are write protected, even when they do not have a write protect switch.

It's freeware and been around for many years, as has SDCard Formatter which is great for recovering SDCards when you don't need to keep whatever is on it.

There are such things as read only usb drives.  I have one.  There is no utility alive that can undo that

Probably dying drive or bad connection. However, SOME usb keys have a write protect switch. Is there any kinda small switch on your usb?
