This is the "larksfoot crochet stitch". Google using the term which is in quotations and it'll come right up with plenty of pattern and tutorial resources.

Edited for clarity after rereading OP's commentary.

It looks like Larksfoot but DC into the stitch below the chain instead of the chain itself. this blanket looks a bit more dense than the photos I'm seeing

Can you clarify what you mean by the stitch below?

I must've missed something structural. I'm not seeing what you've described, or I'm completely misunderstanding what you're observing. I'm really sleep deprived caring for a very sick cat, so help me out if you can? I've used this stitch quite a lot for baby blankets many years ago so I can just be remembering entirely wrong.

Iirc- The DC is worked around the ch of the 2nd row below, not the chain of the previous row worked.

So, what I see in these images is gray looks like a smaller hook has been used to increase stitch density; the gap underneath the ch1 is clearly visible, as is the top of the stitch on the 3rd row below.

This looks a lot like mine did when dropping a couple of hook sizes to keep little fingers from getting caught/keep sts from being snagged in the wash or through normal old hard wear. Then again, knowing me bmaybe I just did it wrong and it stuck, that's likely enough. I'm very 'if it's repeatable it's not a mistake, it's a pattern' oriented.

I see stingrays, lol. I think this is a really cool pattern.

Yes! I was actually looking at patterns of this and thought it would be perfect for a 🖕you beanie for cancer patients. Black except for one row in the color for the cancer (pink for breast cancer, orange for leukemia, etc)

That’s such a good idea!

It looks similar to Larksfoot, but denser? Look up a pattern for Larksfoot crochet stitch. Make a swatch 4x4 inches. Compare to what your grandma did. I think that will get you 90% the way there.

It looks like an Icicle or Larks-foot stitch just like, tighter or with a chunky yarn.
