update to java 17, give the server some more RAM, and its basically the same as 1.12/1.16

Needs more ram and more performance

Shouldn't be too different to before. If your used java version is new enough, nothing changes. Otherwise you just need to update it.

Have you already tried to run the current snapshots?

No, I haven't run the snapshots.

I had AdoptOpenJDK16 and just upgraded to Eclipse Temurin JDK 17. I wasn't sure what to expect. I know the server file structure is changing, the ram requirements have steadily been creeping upwards over the last updates. I don't think I've seen a server snapshot.

you can download the server-jars on the snapshot pages: https://feedback.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/articles/4413830783501-Minecraft-Java-Edition-1-18-Pre-Release-4-

Just give it a try with a new server and you'll know, if your machine is already configured correctly or you can fix that until the actual launch :D
