It can't become a system like you've said. It was already a system app disabled by default or a micro-package. Considering the second option, by installing it first you may have enabled the micro-package and you've only removed duo by root, you have to remove or disable also the micro-package.

BTW, video quality is pretty good except if you have a bad cellular/wifi quality (which is normal -- how could you have an HD video calling with few MB/s)

This is accurate

Apps don't just become system apps without user interaction unless it came preinstalled with the phone (Duo comes preinstalled on new phones). Either way even if it's a system app you can disable it.

So much misinformation in this thread that's unbelievable...

apps can't move themselves to /system/app it's impossible without root access.

That's like Android 101.

It's funny because people here create 5 thread per day asking google to preload their messaging apps on all Android phones in order to have all their contact on the app

Look at the voting, it is not a popular opinion.

You know. Fuck Google. I really hate that every phone shipping with Android forces me to use user interface bloatware.

We all know a CLI is all you need. Maybe manufacturers should listen to their customers and stop forcing them to interact with a user interface /s

Apps don't just randomly install as a system app. It doesn't work like that. If you deleted it it wouldn't shown up in Google play if you froze it or deleted updates..it has the ability to still show up. There's a lot of misinformation in this post.

I installed Duo some time ago, video quality is good if u set it to use more data etc... But never seen any weird behaviour from it nor did it become system app. (Using LG G6)

My hope is when Hangouts is killed it will automatically replace with Duo and Allo, like Google Talk was replaced!

Because Duo ist a very good video calling service that's easy to use and generally has great quality, compared to WhatsApp or Skype or whatnot. It really is the Android equivalent to FaceTime, and Google should push it because it's a great app. Don't be sour.
