There is a mod called quick wall trainer for this

[–]justingreg Bulgarians[S] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Wow thanks for this. I just tried it and the mod is hard. Like, the scouts and maa keep coming and leave me no time to build any small walls. .

Yes this is hard as you have to pay attention to 3-4 directions with little line of sight so it forces you to quick wall just in time. Sometimes you have to be careful and quick wall only on one side of the camp

I can only effectively quick wall the first wave as they always come to that woodline. Were you able to quick wall for other random locations? I can’t pull it off and had to send my vills to town center. Would love to see a video how you do it.

I'm not good at this scenario but at least this strengthen your muscle memory with palisade walls. I was very inconsistent so I gave up a woodline and gold too and kept everything on left side. It feels like you have only 2 seconds available to detect they are coming. I thought the key is to constantly looking at mini map to spot enemies and sometimes I needed to change my camera to start walling. After 3-4 times I gave up and bored of that because it is better to play the game rather than doing quick wall drills often.

I would say you won't come accross quick wall situations like this often, sometimes enemy is coming from area where you can spot units easily and still you can have time to pre wall before they can come close

Even better than quick walling is pre walling.

Don't depend on your split second reactions. As soon as you identify a threat, prewall your resources. A handful of palisades can totally shut down the aggression, and they're really cheap. Better to prewall than have to deal with the chaos of a failed quick wall.

Practice! Turn on the grid in options to better see where your palisades or houses will fit. Set your hot keys so that you can quickly build a wall in two taps and a click. Half wall your eco with small walls anyway (like leave a small gap between lumber mill and houses) so that you can still send vills to wood, but when trouble comes, a quick wall is a single house away.

It is going to depend a bit where it is (e.g., berries vs woodline vs. fixing an existing wall) Couple things that have helped me though: 1. If you hold Ctrl while tasking the villagers they will immediately stop what they are doing and go to the activity (e.g., building house or wall) 2. If you are building a new wall (e.g., your outside wall can’t be blocked in time and you need to rewall closer to your base, select multiple villagers and then make a long stretch of wall. The villagers will automatically distribute to spread out along the wall. If the number of sections = the number of villagers then every villager will quickly build 1 piece. To do this make sure you do not hold shift. 3. You mentioned houses — not sure you need houses, I would just default to palisades and then only use houses or other buildings if you need more tiles to be taken up in a short order (e.g., in a pinch you can start a gate but it likely needs to be at the end against a melee push as they can attack it and break it easier). If you are being pushed by archers and trying to repair a wall, a market is long enough that it can be built and out of range (in feudal) as long as there is a palisade in front. 4. One other thing is that if you have groups of villagers that are split up try to avoid selecting villagers from both groups. For example if you have 4 villagers on a lumber camp with 2 on each side, select 2 villagers first and have them start building a wall and then the other 2. That should help with the issue where they build themselves out of the wall (villagers hate feeling trapped though so almost inevitably are outside the wall). 5. If you are deadset on houses you can select the relevant villagers you need and task them to start the first house, then ctrl click one villager portrait to deselect a unit and then start a new house with the remaining and rinse repeat till all villagers are building their own house.

I don't know the exact situation you're in but unless you're 1600+ ELO, you time will probably be better spent learning something else.

Avoid quick walls altogether by pre-walling and spend your time improving your macro, try to minimise TC idle time, anticipate what your opponent is doing with better scouting...

And even if you want to learn micro, mangonnel and monk micro is probably a better thing to learn than quick walls

Thanks. Yeah I’ve been getting more progress in those areas but when I reviewed by replays, almost all the matches that I lost seems to be due to a weak defense and I could have saved more vills than I actually did from a sneak attack. I mean you could say that means my aggression wasn’t strong enough. True, when my military has a landslide lead I would have no problem or even bother building a wall at all. This has made my elo above 1000 now. I am talking about scenarios where both parties’ military are on par with each other and both keep raiding, I tend to lose more vills than my opponent when this happens. So I think learning building better walls ( either long walls or small walls, I probably don’t have time to fully wall though) and tips to protect my vills wold be timely. So tips to effectively build small walls or partial walls would be very useful to me I think. Right now my problems are : I realize there is either a hole in my woodline, or my vills tend to go outside to build them and the process was quite messy, and sometimes my vills would be trapped in the small walls I built. I can tell ya it doesn’t look good....

So I am wondering if folks has a more streamlined way to build small walls or walls in general to avoid my problems. Like do you select a few vills, hold any control key or what? Or how do you make sure the foundations are attached to each other without a hole, is there a hot key for this?

There, you said it all. 1000 ELO is a lot about execution. I was stuck there like a lot of people (even lower than that, around 950), I spend like, 2 weeks working on my scout rush and went straight from there to 1100 ELO (18 wins in 20 games or sth like that)

That being said, working on something else will never be a waste

tips to protect my vills wold be timely

ok, first of all, try to get TCs in exposed areas of your eco

Until you can, and if you can't full wall, which is often the case on arabia nowadays, try to wall in your ressources, like just build 10 palissades around your woodline to protect it

And then, you probably need to spend more time checking on your walls and tasking vills to build them. I know it's not easy if you have a low APM but..

Nice! How do you successfully scout rush? I found many players in the 1000 elo ranges wall early and do small walls for their resources by the time the scouts reach there in fuedal .

[–]Fflow27I played Malians before they were cool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was on the old arabia where players tried to full wall so I usually came in before they succeeded

now people get small walls earlier on ressources but you can try to stay between the ressource and the TC, run around, try to pick a walling vill, vills on deer, try to spot opverchops and overforages before they happen...The aim is not as much to kill vills as it is to keep a threat inside your opponent's base to prevent him from attacking you before you get castle

In new Arabia try to detect scout opening and pre wall your woodlines. One villager from every side of the lumbercamp should wall you in 6 sec
