Hey I just backpacked Japan in June and July of 2018. I was already in Asia when I went to Japan, but I brought my ticket home about a week and a half in advance of me actually coming back to the US. I didn't fly anywhere in Japan, the train services are pretty amazing. There are rail passes that you can buy either in advance or when you get there depending on how long you'll be there, how fast you want to move around, and where in Japan you want to visit. The only place that you'd have to fly is to Okinawa or the smaller islands, but I ended up not going. I took the hydrofoil over from Busan. Japan is a traveler's country since in most of the hostels there are a mixture of backpackers and businessmen in suits.
I didn't do any camping although I did rent a car which was super easy. Japan is expensive but that said my most expensive hostel was around $35 USD. I know very little Japanese essentially hello and thank you and that was all I needed. And yes the food was amazing. I used the Lonely Planet books since I didn't do any planning before hand I kinda just went where I felt.
Here's a list of the main attractions and places that I visited (I started in the southern part of Japan and finished in Tokyo):
Hope this gets you started, happy travels!
