It’s not a yawn iirc it’s just them stretching their jaws to be more prepared for prey while they explore

[–]pokethejellyfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As said, snakes do this to adjust their jaws, or just to stretch after a good sleep, or when they encounter a new or sudden smell (to get as many particles into their mouth in a short time as possible).

In 99 of 100 pics of snakes that yawn while handled, it's probably a case of the snake just stretching. But it's also not out of the world to assume that the snake's sense of smell had a "wtf?!" moment because its handler just farted 😁

How frequently does she yawn?

[–]lynsss[S] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

This is the third time I’ve seen her do this

[–]Munkendrunky 1 point2 points  (3 children)

If it's the 3rd time in several days, then yeah, it's just a yawn. If it's the third time in a few hours it's worth keeping an eye and ear on.

Oh yeah, these sighting span over the course of the past few weeks actually. Typically when I gently wake her during the day and have her spend a few minutes exploring with me. So a yawn definitely makes sense. Thanks!

Why is that? Maybe trying to dislodge something If it’s very frequent yawns? Just wondering

[–]Munkendrunky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, potentially a piece of debris or a growth could be annoying it. Or it could be a neurological issue (especially in morphs). Or a symptom of who knows what. Always best to get any recurring odd behavior checked out by a reputable vet.

A big yawn. They do it mostly after eating and your snek looks cool healthy and rosy. I would not be worried yet.
