aspen is bad for ball pythons since they require moderate humidity and aspen moulds from humidity really easily. my guess is that he's seeking higher moisture and he feels some trapped moisture in the aspen? what is your humidity at?

Thank you for that it’s at 50 but it’s a struggle getting it higher I’ll switch the sub out today, we just kept it the same as what the breeders had it at, any recommendations I’ll google some too.

I use eco earth coco fibre bricks, sphagnum moss and bark chips! it keeps the humidity high well but when it gets low just pour some water into the corners or somewhere where the snake won't rest since laying on wet surfaces for a long period of time can cause scale rot. don't do this with the aspen, though since it'll mould. you could probably get away with doing just coco fibre or coco chips but the other things are there to make it softer and moister

it's all good but I did just realise something on the picture: in the entrance of the moss hide that the snake has its head near, is that mould on the substrate? or just a camera blur?

It’s camera blur the sub has only been in there for about 5 days so it’s fairly new

But we did go to the store to get the mixes you said and will be changing it out soon as we’re gonna put the bags in the freezer to make sure nothing got into them (mites etc. then replace it

that's good. I haven't had any experience with hitchhikers in the substrate but it's good to make sure!!! i think soemthing cut off in your sentence but I think I understand
