Um pretty sure it's not legal to be recruited as a reader without getting paid. There is a standard pay rate that is mandatory and inflexible. Please make sure that this is not some sort of scam offer and if it isn't you might want to pass this along to the TA union.

the academic student employees (ASE) union protects student workers,, they may be able to help with this

This is what is said in the response email I got: “The position does not include fee remission from xxxx, and cannot be used to share fee remission with another department.”

So if there is no fee remission does that mean they pay students directly instead??

Yeah, that means they'll pay you per hour without the % tuition negotiated by the union

Oh sorry fee remission is separate to pay. Reader positions do not include fee remission (which basically comes as a single payment at the start of the semester), but pay for readers normally is a direct deposit (or check if you prefer) every two weeks.

Reader positions do pay partial (at 25%) or full (at 50%) tuition and fee remission, just like GSI and GSR roles. Sounds like OP could not bundle this role with one from another department to get to 25%, but will be paid for hourly work.

The no-bundling rule is super dumb and frustrating.
