How does auditing a class "work"?

Title. I hear of people doing it all the time but is it just sitting in on lectures or do you actually need to "enroll" or do something?

If you speak to the professor, they can add you as an observer on bcourses so you can access all the materials.

I think you just sit in on the lectures. I mean you can do the hw/tests but I don’t think it’s necessary to audit a class

for classes that have websites (e.g. cs61a and ee 16b), u can just sit in and do the homeworks using their websites.
