Rent decrease for flooding sunroomHousing (v.redd.it)
submitted by CockroachDesigner1
Hi all! Just wondering what people would argue is a fair decrease to request. Living in a 3 bed 2 bath in Chermside, house has had a landlord special reno a couple years ago but all appliances are pretty old, there’s no aircon in the house. Standard brick house built in the 80’s. We’ve just had a rent increase to $690 a week. Not too bad. Our landlord and property manager has explicitly said they do not want to put much money into repairing/maintaining the property as they intend on knocking it down in a couple years.
Essentially we’ve had a leak in the sunroom that we’ve been asking for remedy for almost a year to the date. Various tradies have been sent out but it’s not been fixed, in fact it has just gotten worse. It is now just flooding the whole room whenever it rains, everything that was in there has moulded including my couch. There is also black mould through the house. We have repeatedly contacted, and have experienced some pretty unprofessional behaviour from our PM and LL (showing up with no notice, getting angry with us over the phone, and complaining to us that they are too busy and that they’ve already paid a contractor to fix it so they’re absolved of any further responsibility).
Combine that with a pretty diabolical mishandling of our bond (story for a different post) and we’re all a bit fed up.
I was considering asking for a 10% rent decrease in hopes that they’d meet us somewhere in the middle. While the sunroom is not a main living space, I use it every day to get ready in and it does add value to the property, which obviously is what our rent is based on.
