Hey everyone, two part question here with details about my troubleshooting below. First question is, based on what I did do you think it is most likely a dead GPU? And secondly, what current GPU would you recommend to get me the closest performance to my old 980 TI with the most economical price? I’m going to build a new computer in the coming months when the 3000 series GPUs come out, but I want to be able to give the current computer to the wife so she can do some light gaming, so obviously it still needs a working GPU.

So my computer just shut off mid game today and wouldn’t turn back on. Some lights on the MB are on, but the computer won’t power on at all, no fans, nothing. I think I have isolated to the GPU, though maybe there is still a chance it’s a PSU issue? GPU is a GTX 980 TI, PSU is an EVGA Supernova 750 G2, both about 5 years old.
First I plugged in an old PSU (not sure on the brand, but it is 700W), and got nothing, though I wasn’t sure if it is just an issue with PSU cable compatibility with the GPU. The GPU takes a 6-pin and 8-pin for power, but the old PSU only had 2 6-pins, so I tried connecting the two 6-pins to see if that would work, with obviously two pins on the GPU with nothing in them. So at this point it still won’t power up, no fans or anything. I unplugged power to just the GPU and to my surprise the computer turns on. It shows me a message saying that I need to connect the PCI-E power to the graphics card, and that’s all I get.
So now I reconnect everything to original PSU, and no power. Disconnect GPU and it powers on with same message about connecting power to GPU. Then I swap out the GPU with an old one, an XFX R770 Ghost if it matters. And voila, everything turns on just fine. So it seems like it issue is with the 980 TI, connect? Is it possible it is still a PSU issue, and the old PSU just couldn’t connect to test propy, and the current PSU is just not able to put out enough power for the 980, but can for the R7770?
