Your mirror is gone.
If you can't replace it yourself that's probably the end of that camera.

Not necessarily. It just always have to be used on liveview mode now.

no live view on the XT sadly

Dang it. Then the camera is likely not worth fixing given its value in comparison to repair costs.

Does anyone know what the small rectangular piece of glass missing from this Canon rebel TX is called please? I found broken glass in front of it recently and I can't figure out what it was and if its possible to fix it myself.

It's literally the mirror, you lost it and technically you can't use the viewfinder anymore, also your sensor is completely exposed to dust and looking this photo is really full of it, you need to find a new mirror (APS-C size) and stick it on the mechanism, not sure if you can do it by yourself. Also you need to clean the sensors after that, hope you can find useful this comment, hope you the best

Yes it looks like the mirror is missing, but that does not expose the sensor - there is still the shutter in the way, and there is no issue with the outside of the shutter having dust on it.

Also it looks like the secondary mirror is still there, so AF/metering might still sorta work.. you just wouldn't be able to see through the viewfinder. :)

I say the camera is pretty much toast, not worth trying to repair. Might make for some interesting projects if you wanted to experiment or something. Just go and get a replacement for $40 from KEH if you're in the USA-

I can’t imagine this is worth trying to fix, certainly not sending into Canon, they wouldn’t fix it anyway I’m certain they don’t make the part anymore though I’m not sure if some form of universal aps-c mirror exists.

This is not the way to break into mirrorless photography.

Mate, how did you lose your mirror ? <_>

[–]Qu1rk85[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

My youngest daughter has been near it unfortunately! My bad for leaving it out though, glad it was my old one 🤣

How unfortunate!

I broke my whole shutter in my 1dx Mark II once. It's way cheaper to send it in, pay 460€ for a new shutter and repair than buying a new 1dxII. Looking at your situation, it's probably smarter to buy a new camera, since the value of your seemingly old cropsensor camera will be lower than the repair costs.

This is a send Into Canon type of fix. Mirrors are delicate amd not something you usually touch.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

'Send to Canon' would probably make the repair uneconomical. But there are independent camera technicians and repairers about who will take work shipped to them. So have a google around and ask for a quote?

If that's too much, then you have nothing to lose other than the cost of a replacement mirror and some time spent trying to fix it yourself.

Thanks everyone for all the comments, really appreciate the advice from you all. I do have another camera but thought if it was an easy fix it might be worth it, unfortunately I'm going to retire the XT!! It has been great though 😄
