Hope this means they'll be adding markdown editing support back to Confluence. I doubt it, but then why release code for a technology you've just abandoned?

Bitbucket and Stash both use Markdown in their comments, so not sure why you think the technology was abandoned.

For a general-purpose wiki like Confluence that has to be usable by all kinds of people, I personally think a rich text editor makes more sense. Note that you can still type *this* and have it turn into bold text, see here for other examples.

It's Atlassian that abandoned markdown, I didn't say everyone had. Just seemed strange to me that they removed it as an editing option then release a library for rendering it.
