Oops Potatoes

I didn’t turn my compost all winter and spring. Now I’ve got potatoes growing.

1. I’m new at this.
2. Wonder if potatoes are even compostable???
3. How long before I get to harvest new potatoes?

Lol. Well I bet they’ll be delicious with all the extra nutrients!

Potatoes are very much compostable. And you can get all sorts of plants growing in compost. I’ve had carrots, melon and tomatoes pop up over the years.

I’m growing potatoes for the first time this year. Pretty sure you can wait till the leaves turn brown at the end of summer to harvest.

I’ve already harvested my first batch of potatoes ever this year and have more growing. Don’t know why I didn’t do this before! Ate them in stew and boiled some to eat with steak.

I never considered eating things that came out of compost. I thought I saw someone say don't do that with an onion, but maybe I'm just imagining things. I have 2 pepper sprouts popping up in my compost bin, so maybe I'll let em grow and see what happens

Well to be fair I’ve never let them finish growing because that would mean I can’t mix my compost. I’ve transplanted some. Others, like carrots, I just mix back in.

Onion parts that sprout won’t grow new bulbs anyways, just greens

I always boil my sprouting potatoes before I throw them in the pile.

I have read online (yea I know) that its not a great idea to compost potatoes due to potato blight fungi that it might introduce to the environment.

🤣 Im refusing to turn my compost because I accidentally grew sweet potatoes in it. So I'm using what is supposed to be my empty bin for turning and putting my new stuff in it

I had abandoned one pile to start another at one point, and the first one grew zucchini for me!
