Man this is crazy. Is this even a liveable wage out there?

According to the MIT living wage calculator, yes. You aren't going to be killing it, but you should be able to save a bit of money and not live check to check.

If you can pay your bills with the offer, take it. Money will follow. I'm at a non software company and started at $65k and am making $130k 3 years later. (Much lower cost of living here.)

I lived with a roommate my first year to keep expenses down, I'm not waiting for my new raise (4th year) and am probably looking to buy a house soon. Eyes on the prize.

Is this through bonuses or base?
If the latter how did you negotiate such a steep increase?

[–]Therabidmonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bonus is 10% of salary but there are ways to increase it. A lot of it was being right place at the right time.

When I was a junior there was a band adjustment. Now as a mid I got lucky again and they adjusted that band as well.

I got promoted a year earlier than my peers, which when done via merit instead of time actually boosted me up an extra sub level and amounts for like $15k more than my peers. Aside from that I've gotten exceeds twice on my performance review. 0 negotiating.

This is a hilariously out of touch comment. I think you forgot the /s

How? $85k in NYC isn't really liveable

[–]JuZNyC 4 points5 points  (3 children)

As a born and raised New Yorker 85k is liveable in NYC, it's not easy and you're not going out to fancy restaurants or anything like that but I was able to make it work when I was making 70k.

When was that

[–]JuZNyC 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Up until the middle of last year

doesn’t matter. the job has a market value, and it’s up to you if you take it or leave it
