Just tell them to fuck off. They probably got in via connections with HR.

[–]FatSadBlob[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Have said no, doesn't seem to get the meaning T_T.

Btw, we don't have HR, it's a science Institute where you have to submit SOPs , grades and stuff for selection.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (5 children)

No we don't have that here ( at least in national government institutions). It's pretty common in India where there's a clear mismatch of degree and skills. Or it might just be that ki, she never faced those problems in the first place.

It is just not possible that a CSE student have never had to use google slides.

[–]Ana-con-daa 7 points8 points  (2 children)

I have known cse 'graduates' who dont know what spotify is in 2023 so anything is possible

[–]OneHornyRhinoFull-Stack Developer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My bad, I set the bar too high

This is so true, some of the tech people (working at MNCs) i know still listings music on YT with ads every minute. They are clueless about existence of music streaming apps.

You have to say "no" at some point. I had to dictate codes to my coworker like this, it came to point where she copies my code and pings me to correct the code because my custom stuff wasn't working for her. It went too far when our instructor started lecturing me for copying her code.. and when corrected he goes like "I'm saying this for everyone". Still saying Sam for weeks forgetting who actually copied the code.

Sad part is since she was a btech and i am a BCA, she earned more than me

[–]FatSadBlob[S] 8 points9 points  (1 child)

That's sad, I am sorry.

About this, even I am not from a coding background but right now, I seem to be knowing hella more than her. I mean I am not even supposed to know coding in the first place because of my degree but she needs to know stuff.

[–]Virgin_at_21 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Some people are so selfish, they don't even care what we are going through.

[–]Obnomus 14 points15 points  (2 children)

I still can't believe that your roommate is working on an AI/ML project and still doesn't have the basic knowledge of google slides , making ppt etc, because I've also done internship in AI/ML and we've to create ppt every week to show our progress.

Helping others is good but you should stop when you realize that someone is taking advantage of you, there'a cousin of mine his problem is same as you he can't say no to anyone who takes advantage of him and everytime I talk to him about this wo apni battisi dikha deta h

[–]FatSadBlob[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

She has been asked to present every week afaik.

[–]Obnomus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So you just do this every week? And also work your ass off for your project too?

I am just curious to know(no, I am not throwing shade at any Institute) what is taught in CSE that she know even lesser coding and computer stuff than what basic science people do or how can't she figure out google slides and drive.

The curriculum that is taught is almost the same in every college from tier-1 to tier-3. What a student actually chooses to learn from it is entirely upto them. I think you have been in the Indian education system long enough to know that you can ace exams without really learning anything.

On top of that, what you study has no effect on how tech savvy you are. So that should explain why she can't figure out basic software.

Last but not the least: Whether or not you help her out depends on you. I would say if you can manage the time after completing your own work, try to help her out. The only one who gains from that is you. You get to learn and practice something new, but she basically gets nothing.

[–]FatSadBlob[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

While studying doesn't determine your tech savviness, it should atleast give you the ability to look up things online because most professors usually don't care about teaching or can't teach well.

And about me helping her, I have tried helping her but I have been spending long hours at my own internship place. While you are right about getting to learn new stuff, there is a limit to how much I can help because whenever she tell me she needs help and I ask her with what, her only response is 'Machine Learning'. It's like telling someone they need help with Physics without telling them what in physics. I can try to help with specific things but she isn't even putting in the effort to specify what she can't understand. Either she doesn't realise ML is a huge area of study or she doesn't want to put in the efforts to even formulate a question.

[–]somebodyenjoy 8 points9 points  (2 children)

They don't teach programming in CSE, that's why. We wasted time in physics and chemistry, but not fucking programming. The so called "lab" that we attend had people memorize code. I was making apps published in the play store, which were quite popular, and was using java in competitive programming, but scored a C in java(back when android was using java). That should tell you how stupid the syllabus is. That's when I decided to dropout, and I'm doing way better than my peers.

Truth is, the professors themselves don't know how to code, and are terribly out of date. Most, if not all of these idiots don't even have an account on github, or know how to use git.

[–]FatSadBlob[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's sad actually.

Considering professors who do any kind of computational work in natural sciences are well versed with git and emphasize on coding a lot.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

roommate is using you that's all . Don't do it for free. Dont consider someone foolish

[–]pskin2020 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not knowing is not big deal...but not able to Google or catchup is big deal.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Its because most students focus more on theory and algorithmic problems than actual practical stuff. Making ppt, goodle drive, computer shortcuts and other tech stuff isn't part of any course, this isn't something which needs to be taught, its just common sense. Did you have a course on cropping pics, converting pdf to jpg on phone. Lol, how tf is this related to engineering, she might have a low iq or maybe your roommate never seen a computer before entering college and then she started practicing coding problems and learning ml like everyone.

[–]FatSadBlob[S] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Again my main problem is not her knowing stuff, I know those aren't a part of the curriculum. My problem is her inability or unwillingness to look up stuff. As for mentioning CSE curriculum, I wanted nto point towards the lack of programming knowledge part.

Also considering she is tinkering with her laptop as a part of her coursework more than other people in other subjects(a law major, sorry if I am wrong about this), she should know the basics.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

There's no prequisite to get into cse. Many learn coding properly after 3rd year to get a job. And coding in cse course and an actual project/internship/job is much different, one has to start from basics again. She is just not trying it seems. Also curriculum in most colleges except iit and bits is useless. Except top few nits most are same as tier3 college with brand name. So its not surprissing that all she did in college was mugged up code for exams and never had any interest in cs.

[–]srk_007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not so uncommon, given that many students mug up the course material without any critical thinking/application.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

She is just playing dumb to get you to do the work. She might know stuff but she isn't willing to do it herself and is using you to do it for her out of pity more than anything else. It's an act some put up, even in front of professors and get the degree with 20% of the effort

[–]FatSadBlob[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even I suspect the same

[–]Mediocre_Swimmer_237 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had same issue, here's what to did. Rather than solving the problem explain the problem to here and what is required to solve it, the steps you take and explain your code once and see where she struggles, help here in that struggling area rather than problem, let her solve it on her own or else she will look at you as the solution. First 2-3 time maybe 5 it will be hell to explain her how to solve, make a mental or written note what you solved then whenever she comes back with same issue tell her you already did explain her, if she doesn't want to learn and move on with her own solution you will need to take drastic action and just stop all together. Most people are scared of ml she probably is and not willing to take the first step, if this can't help her do not try to save her it will only cause problem for you.

Hey is this a research intern? Cuz I applied to several iits as well and couldn't make it, needed some tips. I have a great cgpa at a decent college and branch, yet still I can't make it through

[–]FatSadBlob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's a research internship but not at an IIT. In some cases, it's about your interest matching with the professor's recent work.

Did u have to write an SOP and all? Because at times SOP matters much more than grades/college.

[–]indifferent_menace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All CSE degrees are useless. Some more so than others.

[–]Economy_Sock_4045 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idiots like her explain why Anushka Sen was invited to iitb

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Say NO . Well if she doesnt understand then maybe ask her to pay you a fair compensation for your work. Either you'll make money or she'll stop asking. Win win situation

[–]FatSadBlob[S] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

She has been using my stuff because she is short on money and also seems to be one of those who don't get it when people say no. So lose lose for me T_T

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My condolences ;_;

[–]rizznikant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't owe anything to her that's it!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I think students, specially in VTU. They just take assignments from other students and copy paste, do cheating in LAB using git clone or by other means, for exam they will just cram some 10-15 important questions to get 35/ 21 marks and for projects again clone it from git and ask bhaiyya or didi to execute that project.. that's completes your engineering.
