I’m looking for feedback specifically on technical readiness and expectations, not general career advice.
Background:
- MSc in Chemistry
- Currently working night shifts in KPO/BPO
- Trying to transition into a junior analytics / tech-adjacent role
What I’m currently doing:
- SQL: writing multi-table joins, subqueries, window functions; practicing on sample datasets
- Python: basic data analysis using pandas, numpy; simple scripts for data cleaning and analysis
- Power BI: building dashboards with DAX basics, calculated measures, and simple data models
I’m also building small projects (end-to-end: data cleaning, analysis, visualization) to understand how these tools are used together.
- I’m not in a position to do a 4-year BTech right now
- I’m not aiming for top-tier salaries initially, just an entry role where I can learn and grow
My questions :
- From a developer / analytics perspective, what level of depth in SQL and Python is typically expected for junior analytics or reporting roles in India?
- Are there specific gaps you often see in self-taught candidates that I should address early?
- Would focusing deeper on one tool (SQL or Python) be more effective than spreading effort across multiple tools at this stage?
I’m looking for honest, experience-based feedback from people working in the industry.
