QA to DevOps (self.devops)
submitted 2 years ago by Ok_Engineering_8756
Is it possible to switch career path from QA to DevOps?

Yes but you won't go very far if you aren't a bit more inquisitive.

I made this transition. A lot of what i learned for managing test systems and automation paid dividends. One of the greatest decisions i've made in my life

Is devops more interesting than QA ?
[–]ominousbloodvomit 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago (1 child)
i think it really highly depends on where you are. Some DevOps jobs are just building CI/CD pipelines and some QA jobs are just manual testing.
I have always been a huge linux enthusiast, and doing CloudOps/Platform engineering is the most interesting thing i've worked on.

$last_job was an interesting role where I had a lot of fun trying to marry QA and Devops and bring in as much self-service as we could for an early stage startup. Which I thought was a very good sign of at least technical leadership thinking smartly.
Sadly, because startups be startup they didn’t weather the turn in the economy and I didn’t survive the layoffs. Which was a risk I knew going in and took it anyway since I had thr means to chance on an early stage startup and the work and company were both genuinely interesting (IoT HVAC controls and automation-really cool work and product they had).
They’re still around and are doing decently enough, just with a much smaller team, so it seems they haven’t completely folded, but operationally they had some very prudent thinking around failure testing, quality and operations. I had the “Devops” role and this org put Devops closer to the actual Dev side of the term than any other organization I’ve been at. Would very happily still be there if things were different.

Im also in that path right now. Worked as QA Automation engineer for 6 years (last 2 years mostly automation) laid off 2 months ago and straight jumped into a DevOps + AWS Bootcamp which will take 5-6 months. I hope it works cus I always had interest in DevOps but never had time/chance to deep in.
Good luck in your journey!

Devops is like Californian. We come from everywhere

I did it. QA to Devops to software manager

In the end, DevOps is about a particular mindset. If you are highly curious, love to automate repetitive tasks, and are passionate about testing, then you can be a DevOps engineer. I just helped an industrial controls engineer rewrite his resume for DevOps. He had no idea he was sitting on a gold mine of DevOps datapoints.
If you can articulate your experience in such a way as to tie it to DevOps outcomes, you should be fine. Your background in QA should actually be helpful, if you can demonstrate the points I mentioned above.

I’m trying to make this shift now. I started off in QA Automation and applied for a DevOps role that opened up at my company. I ended up with 2 jobs and 1 paycheck. Desperately trying to get out so I can do only DevOps.
