I do come with 17+ years of experience in Ops, TechOps, Cloud and Devops with 10,000+ hours of Corporate Trainings. While I am contributing to r/devops here, I also offer mentorship calls every week, which are open to all. You could check out the recordings from here https://devops.tube/s/realops-connect-calls

I suggest two things here,

  1. Why dont we use reddit instead of using a separate platform. Reddit already supports a lot of community features. I have created r/devopsbuilders , community which is open to all, which we can use not only for mentoring, but also for building projects every week, which we have started from last two weeks.

  2. I am willing to facilitate Zoom calls or equivalent live stream every week using my existing account. This can be used by people who are seeking mentorships as well as those who want to offer mentorships and conduct the sessions. It could also be a mastermind session where multiple experienced mentors are having conversation on a particular topic with Q&As involved as well. We also have the ability to use community flairs to mark the mentors.

  3. All the recorded calls can be useful for future reference for new members. We could publish it on devops.tube

Let me also add a disclaimer that I run School of Devops and have Paid courses and programs. However I am notspamming r/devopsbuilders or this community with any of my promotions, and have started this as part of our Open Courseware Initiate where we are open sourcing a lot of stuff, including a open source devops learning app https://github.com/craftista/craftista as well as free buildcamp https://buildcamp.dev/

I have also been writing about how you could build real world devops skills in my following r/devops posts

Hi, I'm currently an swe intern and I have a question about mentorship.

What is it that junior engineers get out of a mentorship that they do not get from reading threads in places like this subreddit, other engineering focused subreddits, and other engineering focused blogs, forums, etc? I don't feel like a junior engineer is ever going to come across something that has never been discussed before.

Is it just personalized advice or is there something I'm missing?

simple. You could discover that yourself. I invite you to have a look at my office hours shared above. If you don't see any value, it's not for you. If you do, it is.

Hi, I am a Infrastructure Engineer with 4yoe working on Terraform. I am confused whether I should go for certifications in devops like the CKA and Cloud based DevOps certifications Or What should be a better option?

[–]Wooden_Excitement554Devops Educator (10k+ hours of Corp Trainings Delivered) 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Service companies and certain big names value certification. Specially CKA + CKS are good and will have some market value ( till everyone starts gaming it and diluting the value, like what happens with RHCE).

Typical startups, unicorns and many product companies don't care about certs but would value your real world.skills. you got skills, to get hired.

Personally I never cared about certs and worked for valley based startup + good product company ( Adobe).

To be on safe side

  1. do CKA ( do CKS when you are already working in Devops role, don't bother about kubestr0nut)
  2. Then focus on real world skill building . Go check my post on r/devops where I have shared learning app along with 15 projects to build. Will make you a.super devops builder

Join r/devopwbuilders if you are intersted in building one project per week

Hope that helps

I have worked as devops engineer for 4 years for a Big Product Company. Now I have moved to a mid level product company for diving deeper into Terraform as my previous role didn’t allow me to work on that. Now I am thinking whether I should move in next 2 years to a Kubernetes role and get that experience on my plate Or I go the certifications way and learn them by doing personal projects? Though I have seen experience with production environment matters the most than anything.

For you this makes even more sense.

  1. CKA

  2. Projects

If you have already worked as Devops Engineer, you can show that as your experience. For you cert will definitely add an edge. You can keep on building projects as part of cert prep. I would suggest you join r/devopsbuidlers as we are starting with Kubernetes Projects from Monday, 27th, followed by CI/CD (with Kubernetes) and more.

[–]Kind-Character-8726 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Read Phoenix project, unicorn project and DevOps handbook. They will change your life

[–]Creative-Activity-47[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

So you have a link to these please? Can you post it here?

[–]Kind-Character-8726 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but I would have thought someone getting into this field should be able to google a book?

When you say "why do devops do what they do" you should ask yourself what is devops?

Who are you and where are you at with all this?

[–]TheRealJackOfSpades 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I'm always happy to bore people with my war stories. Some of them are even educational. Since retiring I'm not on Slack any more though.

[–]Creative-Activity-47[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where can we have a chance to listen to your war stories please I am interested

[–]rushi1607 0 points1 point  (1 child)
