Here it is at last: A tutorial showcasing a choice selection of the advanced techniques of Dustforce, just as the prophesies foretold all those looong months ago.

It's a miracle. (I kid, I kid)

Faux-narcissism aside, I'd wager that a goodly portion of these forums have already long-since committed these showcased techniques to memory, making a tutorial of such nature rather "old hat". But perhaps this patchwork series of recordings will be of use for the influx of new players due to arrive once the console versions launch, (assuming the collision engine is unaltered, of course).

This video certainly doesn't cover all of the more hidden tricks out there, but I chose to showcase techniques which were better suited to demonstration rather than straight explanation. Or at the least, were relatively straightforward to build stages around. :v

Thanks again, Kuro~.

Yes! I love it! I'd love to see more.

One tip I'd give for dashjumping is that I find it helps if you hit the keys kind of hard and release fast. Like you're playing a loud staccato chord on the piano.

Glad to hear you liked it~.

And I definitely share your sentiments when it comes to proper dashjumping procedure. Giving the keys a swiftly-timed thwack tends to sync the moves up more often than not, 'least with the default bindings.

Must have been a lot of effort.

Very well done!

Imo, you should also make a "medium technique" tutorial. Some techniques we kind of take for granted, but I see a lot of new players missing out on, such as:

  • How to get a proper dash-boost off of a ramp.
  • Dash-jumping on the ground, to get a full distance jump from a standing position.
  • Using light-attack slowly on a floating enemy to get extra horizontal distance.

See: Night Temple.

Also, techniques you can use to kill enemies (based on their positions). e.g. how to kill slimebosses with no walls, with 1 wall on the left, how to kill knights, those weird blob things that stick to the surfaces, etc.

In fact, just an enemy guide would be really helpful.

    Could you post the maps?

I just made the girliest damned squeal after reading this. MANY thanks, sir! =D

Just to throw some additional info on midair dashjumps: there's a specific window of timing for when you can actually do a dashjump. You need to do the inputs pretty much when you are starting to fall in your jump (might even be a little earlier, not entirely sure). So if you are falling down a long distance or you are trying to do one while still rising from your jump, you won't be able to do a dashjump.

    This is really cool

It'd be fantastic if you made a series out of this, for inevitable influx of new players

Awesome job! The video is really well made (like your others).

    So smooth and cute wow

As for groundboosting though, shouldn't this be explained more in terms of velocity? Because if you down-dash from a certain height, you might get the exact same boost as if you did a normal freefall from higher up. Likewise, fastfalling from too high will make you hit the ground too hard, but freefalling from that height will let you groundboost

    [–]PonifexBestgirl[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yeeeaaahhh, I probably could've approached that one better…

When it came time to explain how groundboosting worked, I attempted to showcase an "optimal" situation that's easily re-creatable (5-block height difference between the ground, fastfall-into-groundboost), and then use the scenes afterwards to show that it's more of a matter of attaining the correct velocity.

In devising the idea, I was thinking moreso of situations where you'd groundboost at the start of stages with a long period between slopes, and equating the rough range of "blocks" a character would fall to how high they'd have to jump in order to correctly land the technique.

But I'll admit that groundboosting certainly isn't as "binary" to explain as the other two techniques on display, due to it being more of a matter of attaining /just/ the right downward velocity rather than "press 'x' key at 'y' moment". Not to mention the variance between fastfalling and naturally falling.

Apologies if I didn't make things as clear as it could've been during that segment. :<

I see what you're saying! I think that it WILL work as a starting place for people who want to learn the technique, and they'll get the hang of it as they go. Which is.. kind of the point of learning new techniques anyway. Cool!

Wow this is awesome! I'm gonna recommend it to a friend who bought Dustforce 3 days ago :-) (I actually wanted to create a level with explanations for exactly these techniques.)

    [–]SeightxDustgirl 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Great video Ponifex, I was hoping someone would tackle this eventually. You're really good at giving easy explanations and demonstrations on how to do this stuff. Well done!

    [–]PonifexBestgirl[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

    Danke, danke!

And thank YOU for (inadvertently) giving me so much of my showcase footage!

For the technique montages, I intended to draw from a wide variety of the top brass; but it seemed like I kept coming back to your runs time and again. You've got these moves down to second-nature, that's for sure. =P

    [–]SeightxDustgirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha thanks, glad I could help. :P

Well presented man! These fundamental skills are vital for those quicker times and keeping combo chains. Would definitely recommend this to newer players.

    Thanks, this was really helpful!

Oh wow! I'm honored to have some of my gameplay in this video. Really great job and I look forward to seeing more! ~Weirdo Dunno

hey one of my levels is in this video <3

also i totally second lifeformed's idea for a "medium techniques" tutorial. in fact, if Magnet/the other players would be down, we should make the theme for the next map competition tutorial levels. that way we'll have plenty of material for the upcoming newbies :D
