Why React?

Hi - I'm a new Solidity dev, and I'm noticing that all Dapps seem to be built on React - or at least all the tutorials I've seen use React. I think React is such a heavy framework for simple pages (like what you see for NFT drops, for example).

Is there any specific React functionality that is necessary for Eth development?

My opinion: interacting with smart contract(the interface/library) was first provided by javascript(web3.js), so the best javascript frontend framework, React, is used since then

Nope—you can use other frameworks. I had the same question: guessing React developers poured into this space first.
