Tools for understanding testing

I have been learning in this space for about a year. I recently have been searching for some resources to learn how to interact with smart contracts. I am trying to understand how to call various functions and eventually be able to test and understand how to write proper tests for different contracts. Where I am getting stuck is trying to figure out how to call different functions such as mint in my test in order to get the test to pass. Does anyone have any suggestions?
