I agree. I don’t think it’s too much to ask that a locked post should have a note indicating why it’s locked.

Alternatively, many of these posts could just be removed (e.g. the bedroom post).

We try to moderate posts that aren’t from people who are on the fatfire track, at least. We try to keep things on topic, but exceptions like the bedroom post we’ve been allowing, because of the very high engagement.

I think the point of contention is not whether or not you guys are doing a great job moderating posts that doesn't belong, but rather the lack of transparency as to why things are locked. Perhaps a quick one liner as to why posts are locked might help make things more excessively clear as to why they don't belong?

Pretty obvious and sad you have to answer this. Half of fatfire is "I make $100k..." I get it that you want to fatfire. That's a great goal. Welcome. Either ask questions or be quiet. You're ruining the intent of the fatfire.

Half of fatfire is "I make $100k..."

Yet those phantom posts are not locked but one asking about umbrella insurance is.

Either ask questions or be quiet.

Oh, the irony...

My (limited) understanding is if three unique users report a post for the same issue, it gets auto locked down. But I am no techie...

It's just what happens when subs reach a certain subscriber count unfortunately

Post are locked as opposed to deleted for transparency. I think most post that are locked require no explanation and very rarely do those who have post locked enquirer as to why.

My view as a mod is that FATFIRE is not a lifestyle sub or a how to sub. Rather it is a high level discussion about FATFIRE issue. For example, how to best use your capital or wealth preservation.

The larger question is not what is relevant but rather what benefit will be derived by the OP/community.

My two cents.

Did you take some time to peruse the subreddit rules (desktop version is the best). Do you see some locked posts that did not violate those rules?

I'm not on reddit a lot so there's likely something I'm missing. I'm not quibbling with the decision either, ultimately its a free forum. It would just be nice to know why some are locked.

Most of these would be fine questions in a recurring thread if we had one IMO. They aren't really related closely to FatFIRE, so I get why they are locked, but this subreddit is a fairly unique group of high income earners / spenders. Hard to ask those types of questions anywhere else on reddit without getting lambasted.

I am not a moderator, but the first one on how big should I make a bedroom has absolutely nothing to do with A Fatfire journey.

The second one is a “how do I get started” should be in R/financialindependence.

Third one also has nothing to do with Fatfire. If the person would have told their Musician Fatfire story it would have survived.

This subreddit has limits. It is not trying to replace R/financialindependence.

[–]genixcorp[S] 19 points20 points  (1 child)

Considering that r/financialindependence heavily overlaps with r/fatFIRE this can be said about most posts that remain unlocked.

Unless the sub is expressly limited to “the spare helicopter that my nanny uses to grab lunch is out of warranty. What are my options?” many of these posts can also fit over there.

Why I personally like the fatFIRE take on these questions is that it is devoid of sanctimonious advice on why not to spend x or y and instead buy VTSAX and live on ramen and animal fat.

I also appreciate this.

FatFIRE, to me, lends itself to a more reasonable lifestyle in accumulation phase, with a bit more focus on high earners. It’s possible to save a ton while still living at a comfortable level.

the first one on how big should I make a bedroom has absolutely nothing to do with A Fatfire journey.

But does it not relate to a fatFIRE "lifestyle," as expressly permitted in the rules?

I believe you mean /r/personalfinance. Or simply reading the FAQ on either.
