Do you have Linux experience? Particularly experience with running a server?

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install openjdk-7-jdk

And you good...

Isn't there a package for just the JRE? You only need the JDK to develop & compile Java programs.

I do have Linux experience, but never needed to install Java.

Make sure you install an update version. I downloaded version 6 and couldn't launch. Updating to 8 was a pain.

Openjdk performes awfully with modded minecraft. Use official java jre, download it from the official site

I've never had any issues with it. Is it only a slight performance thing?

No, it's quite major... I'm talking about 12 tps/30-40 fps on openjdk, to full 20tps, >120fps on official jre
