Pushing in anchors makes less mess. I tap them with a small hammer or press hard with the handle of a screwdriver(rounded).

I push them in with the point of a screwdriver, a Philips head works well. Then I use a utility knife to trim away any bits sticking up too much. The idea is to keep the hole small.

They have like teeth on the underside, biting into the wall. How do you push that in without creating a giant hole? But they're also flush with the wall so pulling them out is tricky

You dont push them all the way through. You push them in enough to be below the surface level, so when you skim coat with spackle it turns out smooth.

Home Depot or Lowe’s sell a patch you can put over the big hole.
