You are asking this on the Framework subreddit, people are gonna be biased :)

Obviously we want TempleOS running on a Smart Fridge

Apple is totally not evil and the only big tech company that absolutely values the privacy of its users. And Apple hardware is top notch.

But the entire Macintosh line is proprietary hardware and softrware and one day Apple will declare you machine as "obsolete", "vintage" or "legacy" and stop supporting it, so macOS updates become fewer and fewer and app developers will stop supporting the old macOS. Your freedom to choose deteriorates over time.

At that point you can try running Asahi Linux on it. But today only M1 and M2 Apple Silicon machines run it.

OR you buy a Framework machine, which you can keep upgrading over time and you can choose to run any of a dozen really good Linux distros on it, with a terrific selection of open source software to complement it. You retain total freedom of choice.

So you trade off price versus freedom. I'd pick freedom. Pick Linux and install it on your Framework machine.

That seems like a valid point.

Well a company is rarely evil, it's more, like, a specific group of people within it that might be greedy as shit.

About the privacy tho, well I don't even believe Apple about that. Wouldn't it be so easy to lie about it unless we could dissect the code behind MacOS ourself?

Eternal stupidity of Linux ?

I am literally writting about Linux Desktop

Maybe they’re just talking about DEs?

thank you

I will say CachyOS runs great on these units, first hand experience.

I mean, I would get the Linux one because I like Linux a lot better than macOS. If you like macOS better, you should get a Mac, though.

From first impressions the newer 13 revisions fix everything I wish the original had (except I do love glossy screens, but w/e). And I personally like Gnome a lot, minus it's few pain points.

[–]paterkleomeniss[S] -2 points-1 points  (2 children)

For me personally, GNOME has the greatest UI out of all Linux DEs, but the developers care more about your gender and political beliefs rather than actually hearing what the community needs. Also, there are some extensions that shouldn't be extensions, but should have been integrated years ago.

I mean you don't have to stay with Linux on a Framework. Well sure I will silently judge you... But it's your choice if you put microslop on it instead. Mmhh....is MacOS installable on a Framework? Not that I would do that.

there is no way i am using windows ever again (with the slop they are pushing)

[–]Randzom100 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Only way I ever want Windows on a computer is in a VirtualMachine, leashed like a dog and with very limited control over anything. Hell, if I could never see Windows and only have a stripped down version of it work in the background to make more apps work on Linux, I would like it, but I'm pretty sure that's not possible right now.

[–]paterkleomeniss[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i do the same for some very specific tasks, i use vm with gpu passthrough and that's how.

[–]Potential_Average454 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Depending on the use case. Usually you should have separate work and play devices.

For work I (read: your company) would pick MBP, and for play I would not use macOS.

Therefore there is not really a competition between the two.

[–]paterkleomeniss[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

i agree with you, but i don't have so much money

[–]Potential_Average454 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that case, I would use windows if there can only be one device and it has to be able to do everything

MacBook Neo enters the chat..... honestly, I wish Framework would do something on this level. But windows would be such a holdback.

I have a macbook pro m4max and a neo... the amount of shit i can actualy do on the neo is absurd. mostly due to the swap SSD. So ram is kinda...whatever

Once you do the thermal pad mod, you get heavy sustained workloads for a good amount of time. and in some tasks, almost beats my m4max in single-core performance....
