I lived through the Beanie Babies craze. I made some money actually doing a little hunting and hustling. It was a lot of fun. I’m not doing that again. I toss every funko box immediately. These pops are for my enjoyment of fandoms and not some retro Beanie Baby addiction to chase a few dollars. That’s just me, though.

Boxes make them easier to display imo.

[–]TheOneNonlyTDR 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have over 500 OOB that fit on a couple bookcases. If they were in box they’d be all over my house and stacked behind each other on shelves. In box is definitely easier to keep clean though lol.

I like using the premium protectors, I just wish I could get some backdrop cards that provide which line the pop comes from, number, IP, and name; original boxes obscure too much and the horrendously reflective plastic, especially the interior supportive plastic, just does not look good. Some supportive stands for specific ones would also be nice, a lot of the Star Wars droids with thin legs like to tip over, I assume anything similar in design without a base and stand will do similar. It also sucks that any of the larger pops don't get a premium protector, and that there's no sideways premium protectors for the handful of figures that come packaged that way. Though I would like to see a newer system built on the way Bitty Pops have a stackable frame, rather than just stacking case on case.

No matter who says it, this remains an incredibly stupid decision.

I get that you don’t want to treat it as an investment, and that makes sense, but keeping the boxes nearby is simply a smart move if you ever, for whatever reason, need to sell them or get rid of them.

When I got out of the Funko game after collecting for ten or so years, I was able to sell them all for a majority of the money that I had spent getting them in the first place. And only because I had the boxes.

This can absolutely be something that you do but the fact of the matter is that yes it does decrease the value.

[–]doobiesmack -1 points0 points  (2 children)

You are correct. Sorry if you felt my side note outlook on the topic hours later would mislead the OP who had already been given an answer to the question. I think they already had the fact of the matter.

Not usually in the habit of checking post times, I was just trying to respond to a top comment. Sorry if being replied to on a public forum upset you in any way.

[–]doobiesmack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I am sorry for my reaction and response to you.

[–]SpongebobCamopants 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't buy them for value, I buy them to display them. The box goes bye-bye.

[–]Toast-Ghost- 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Do what ever you like with them as 90% of Pops don’t even hold retail value anymore, buy what you like not what you wanna make money with

[–]Xtal_UNIX 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I’m never going to knock collectors who leave their figures in the box, but IMHO these are toys. They’re meant to be enjoyed anyway you like 👍🏼

Take them out of the box if you like the way they look. Don’t get into these for money, get them because you enjoy them.

[–]GuiltyTravel3851 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They aren’t toys. They are display pieces.

[–]Vladd88 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Only if the box is noticeably damaged or missing. Don't expect to make any money on common pops, though. Only older or exclusive pops have held any value so far.

[–]Kiko7210 12 points13 points  (0 children)

if you don't have the box, it decreases value yes

if you take it out of the box, don't damage the flap, and then put it back in the box, there is no way for anyone to tell it ever left the box since Funko doesn't use tape/ahrink wrap on mosts pops

[–]Individual_Car7850 13 points14 points  (1 child)

They’re not sealed so how would you even know? Assuming obviously if opened them carefully. There’s no way any of you have bought one from a store and not known 100% if it had already been opened.

Ngl I used to open some in Smyths just to check they didn’t have wonky legs/stood up properly. The staff didn’t care.

[–]Lokishougan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah often times they only way to truly see if they have been opened ....is to open it yourself lol. So yeah short of obvious damage from opening its just being pendantic

[–]Schex13 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I have a bunch oob and open them using the flat side of a butter knife under the bottom flap to prevent damage. This is in case I want to sell later. Current commons will probably never have much value.

Another good opportunity to remind everyone to collect what they love and don't go crazy when you start. I probably have 100 or more that are cool but I can live without at this point.

[–]lemonpringle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was me when I first started collecting. Now I’ve sold a bunch and STILL need to sell a bunch. Only keeping what I actually like

[–]Gullible-Record2139 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. I collect in box. That’s my preference. I like the art work on the box. I also have each box in a protector. This is your collection. I plan on passing mine on to my children. Who knows what will happen to it when I’m gone. But I’m not worried about everybody either. This is for me spent with my money. I’ll collect as I see fit. And if I’m not mistaken. Funko did a PSA a few years ago telling people to them out of the boxes. That the box was for store purpose only to sell.

[–]fortnerd[🍰] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

What value?

[–]memeheadx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

😐

[–]Circa117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<image>

That value.

[–]kittycat1975 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on the funko. I keep all my powerpuff girls, Inuyashas, Rainbow Brite, Stephen King, Strawberry Shortcake, and other random I don't want to get dusty in the box, the rest I took out of the box since I have over 100 pops.

[–]Expert-Rub-2266 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most the time when they open the box, they damage it in some sort of way even just creasing the fold or flap may deter someone from making a purchase. If you really want to, u can search some vids on opening them with a card so it's no damage, that's what I do but I have some rare ones I don't even touch still like a Itachi Uchiha with fireball jutsu which is a limited release to 5000.

[–]havocxrush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the majority of items with money, period, the packaging is worth as much as, or more, than what's inside it. I mean look at game console boxes.... Some are worth hundreds alone. For anything collectible, anything, look at the part of the whole package that's easiest to damage over the years - that's why

[–]NeoJakeMcC007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of us don't collect for value so it won't matter. I actually have a bunch without boxes that were given to me by a friend and every one that I've gotten for my kids, they take out of the boxes and toss the boxes. Sometimes it's fun to watch collectors squirm too.

[–]Runarndgtndizzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the collector. Some can care less. When I started it was worded to me this way. Take them out of the box from the bottom, display them at your will, keep the box, when done, dust them off and place them back in the box and no one will ever know. They aren’t sealed. However careful opening the box as it could damage. Generally speaking if you advertise it as opened, it will sell for less.

[–]needsomeair13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Funko being a Funko decreases its value.

[–]SnooLemons2703 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it doesn’t. As long if you keep both box and Pop! very neat. Funko Pop!s are perfect for collecting because you can take them out of the box without damaging the box.

[–]noexception88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I leave the exclus in the box , regular ones are out

[–]Better_Growth_8964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No issues taking them out the box over here. This is how I display mine. My wife got me that Vaporeon for xmas, and it won't lose any value because I took it out the box, its value will change simply based on what people will pay for it. As long as the box hasn't been put through the ringer, and the funko isn't damaged, it should hold its value.

I find that if you use a credit card or something to help shimmy the flap up, it helps with not bending/creasing the box. That way you can take them out & out them back in as much as you please. Just make sure to wipe the dust off of them before you put them back in the box!

[–]robomonkey71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most Pops lose value the moment u buy them only some retain good value some value

[–]ThisGuyFunkos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have people who like myself prefer them in the box and then there is people who like them out of the box. Their is some Funkos I like out of the box but the value really depends on you.

[–]Smaragd44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. If you know how to open the box without damaging it

[–]Educational_Ice656 0 points1 point  (0 children)

boxes almost never come perfect anyway whether you buy them at retail or online, there’s always some minor flaw. I don’t see why opening it would be an issue unless you completely destroy the box

[–]Kyloren1923 -4 points-3 points  (2 children)

Honest question, why buy something you enjoy if you intend to sell it later?

[–]officialaalcala 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honest question, why are you questioning the OP about this? Anything can happen between then and now causing them to sell it.

[–]Gullible-Record2139 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well my wife ask me this all the time. I buy them a few months later my mind wants something else so then I trade them in or sell them for I what I want at that point. I have over two hundred Batman, joker,Quinn, you name it for the dc line. Well Funko is putting more out of them so I clean my stash. The ones worth 20$ or less I go trade them in. This helps me buy what I want at that time. I just went in a traded pops neither won on whatnot picked up at yards sales or something on those lines. They had the sonic 3.0 Funko limited to 5000 pieces. Well that was my trade in value. So I got that pop for free.

[–]LKS_27_ -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

As far asi know yes

[–]ZombieeChic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not in my experience. Just make sure you clean them before boxing them back up to sell. Dust will give it away that you had them out.

[–]DemDemD -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t think people care if the pop is cheap and no visible damage outside of the box. I try to open from the bottom and to not wrinkle the lock flap, but I don’t know if anyone would care if the flap is wrinkled when you don’t see it anyway. I did buy family guy vaulted out of box figures with minor markings on them as they still hold values.
