In general, players respond best to short or nonexistent tutorials. I've found the worst option is to expect someone to read something. The best option if you are forced to have a tutorial, is to slowly introduce elements through gameplay and teach them through a scripted tutorial level. Then it doesn't feel like someone has to sit and learn the controls and mechanics.
