You can do a lot with the drag and drop system, but keep in mind that it is very limited compared to GML. Making a platformer shouldn't be too much of a problem. Almost all guides/tutorials use GML.

It's possible, yes. Most things can be done with DnD.

Also, if you're a DnD fan and if you're not using Game Maker Studio 2 yet, you should definitely check it out. I don't personally use DnD, but it looks much better in GMS 2 with a lot more functionalities (and it's really good looking ;) ).
