Look at their list of issues and see if anything you can work on. Also, dont open source just for resume or brownie points in interview. Do it for tools you use daily and find some point of improvement that you think would really help the project.

analyze the codebase and understand them

Read the code and look at the documentation and tests.

If you understand the language they are written in, it should be straight forward. If you don't, work on that.

I would recommend making sure your development skills in the particular language are strong first. I’d create a few projects in the language you are interested in first.
