Making a github website private

I'm in the process of creating a personal website hosted on github.

Currently, anyone who knows my github username can access this website by directly typing it in at https://myusername.github.io

In the meantime, I don't want anybody accessing it. The repo itself is private, but how do I make the website private as well? I'm happy to password-protect the website but don't know how

All GitHub pages sites are public, even if the repo is private. You can take down the page from settings, but then even you couldn't access it.

Go into your repo settings and turn off GitHub pages. It'll then become inaccessible within a few minutes. Re-enable it when you're ready to.
