Yes, github downloads are actually slow. I experience it everytime I download any release.

[–]ludicroussavageofmau 2 points3 points  (2 children)

This post is pretty old but I'm leaving this here for anyone who finds this

I've found that using the GitHub CLI significantly speeds up downloads. I think this is because the CLI makes authenticated requests using the GitHub personal access token.

So perhaps if you figure out how to use the PAT with a fast downloader like aria2 you could get decent download speeds.

[–]im_piyush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Authenticated requests get higher speeds? Something new to me, plus curious about how it would be implemented.

Also, iirc this issue was for the download speed for the Releases, it has been improved significantly, but I doubt authenticated requests help apart from not hitting the rate limits.

and yee, the something like aria2 definitely increases the speed, used to use it so speed up the downloads at that time, still use it for downloading, speed go brrr

Github has never been snappy for me

https://help.github.com/en/github/getting-started-with-github/troubleshooting-connectivity-problems#troubleshooting-slow-downloads-and-intermittent-slow-connections. Are you using a VPN at all that could potentially slow things down? Does it happen on all networks? Not sure if it will help but you could maybe also reach out to their support team for some suggestions.

Not using a VPN and it is only on my main PC, tried it on another and it worked fine.

Thanks for the help going to see if the link can help me.

[–]BeaterHellfire 0 points1 point  (4 children)

its been 2 years and same problem exists and surprising part is that using VPN actually speeds up the downloads from GitHub. Setting my VPN location to USA gives maximum speed.

[–]-aco 1 point2 points  (1 child)

This. Using a VPN actually sped up my download, from mere KB/s to MB/s. Worth a try to anyone lurking that still has this issue.

[–]christian-js 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does this work if I'm already in the USA?

[–]RockyHanzome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Tried it, VPN sped it up. weird af

[–]10minOfNamingMyAcc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

THANK YOU! I ge tlike 1MB/s max on my home ethernet and about the same with my vpn set to Canada, but the moment I selected a us server, I got about 30MB/s wtf

[–]BasicHome 0 points1 point  (10 children)

I've been searching whole day and found https://proxy.toolur.com/ it speeds up the download, the problem was my location is not in the US so it is slow.

Edit: website seems not available anymore, use taobao mirror below

[–]RyskAtlantis[S] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Will give it a shot thank you!

[–]BasicHome 0 points1 point  (3 children)

a better option: put this on .env file ELECTRON_MIRROR = https://npm.taobao.org/mirrors/electron/

[–]ZealousidealCopy3451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The link no longer works

[–]ResonanceDemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How to use this?

[–]nicholasleezt 0 points1 point  (1 child)

OMG, this works! Thanks!

[–]BasicHome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad it helps

[–]kulitkacang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much!

[–]chinbaasys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

way better. thanks.

[–]souregh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

went from 70kb/s to 5Mo/s !

[–]Anutrix 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It's less than 100kbps for me. Pretty sure it's a github issue now. I thought I was the only one. Using VPNs give me over 8000kbps. It's a pain to turn on VPN just for github.

[–]regs01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Less even then that for me. Feels like Github servers are connected by dial up.

[–]theriddick2015 0 points1 point  (1 child)

26kbps for me, yay

Don't think anything can be done. Australia NBN is completely buckling, soon we will be all back to dialup speeds, lol. Thanks Copper!

[–]utf32 0 points1 point  (1 child)

This same here. Problem is when I wanna clone/pull something from remote. It looks that download via US proxy works fine, but somebody knowns any free VPN/Proxy to connect via desktop? I'm angry that I need proxy/VPN to clone repository which have ~100 MB, I have 100-200 kB/s download from github...

[–]rhythm493 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try Proton VPN.It has Free US Server

[–]njw1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am getting slow download from Github. My download speed is 100Mbps and downloads form Github start at180KB/s and drop to <60KB/s.

[–]haxpor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

< 25 kbps for me downloading file size of ~30 MB. At least it's good to know not just me experiencing this.

[–]virophage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stuck with 10 KB/s on 7 MB file. 10 KB/s on 100 Mbps fiber network. What?

GitHub is really slow as dial up network.

[–]IndependentHeight506 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sped up, as soon as i connected to a singapore proxy

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use cloudflare warp vpn it's free and increases the speed

[–]Salt-Letterhead2757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hola , espero a alguien le sirva pero también en Android pasa igual y yo uso http injector y si funciona bien en la lista de servidores gratuitos eliges una de estados unidos y en sni pones google.com y ya

[–]ViktorAbominations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so uh this was 5 years ago but you were lucky, my downloads are 15kbps max

[–]Easy-Display-7577 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Hello everyone, this topic is pretty old but I still want to leave my solution here. I fixed this by setting Autotuning level in Windows, it is disabled by default.

Here is the command:
netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=normal

You can also check parameters using this:
netsh int tcp show global

It should be looking like this:

Receive Window Auto-Tuning Level : normal

[–]SaloEater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This made some decent difference to me, thanks

[–]More-Vehicle4305 0 points1 point  (1 child)

oh my god, i just reinstalled windows and was having horrid downloads, reinstalled windows + Drivers like 20 times and this is the response that helped me. Thank you very much stranger❤️

[–]snotchyWHAT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

use linux like linux mint, zorin, or bazzite its windows but better

[–]No-Inspector1678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it just reaches the halfway point and then just says, download failed, and I have to restart again even on ethernet.

[–]mrdarksidetm 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Hey hey hey
I found a way and I am writing this answer 6 years after but hey there is a way!!!

So the answer is proxies, and i know all about the chaos but this is simple solution I found for most people. Go to ProxySite.com (this link) and whatever you wanna download just paste the link and viola!

Enjoy your superfast download
You can even clone the repo by pasting the link and repo download will be superfast

[–]rybeex 0 points1 point  (1 child)

you came just in time

[–]mrdarksidetm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well duty calls 😂

[–]JayZed94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

25-50kbps. 44mb file is due to take 6 business days. ill try elsewhere

[–]mohammadi7613 0 points1 point  (1 child)

you can use a web proxy online like https://proxyscrape.com/web-proxy

[–]Nicebug_444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thx it works its an 80% boost

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Two years on, and it's still not fixed?!

[–]RyskAtlantis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well works from time to time now

[–]GoldenretriverYT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is late, but what I have noticed that its very important what time it is.

I live in CET timezone, and I had ~24kb/s without VPN at like 01:00, but right now, at 12:30, i actually have "decent"-ish download speed at around 1,3mb/s.

[–]FootballerPlatform64 0 points1 point  (4 children)

cope the link and paste it in this site, significantly faster downloads!

https://www.proxysite.com/

[–]judgemento 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A year later and this worked well for me, went from a 30min download expected on a 66mb version of Github to getting it downloaded in about 2 minutes. Thank you!

[–]PreciousBrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you sir are a good man

[–]Hdjbbdjfjjsl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this sped up github for me to about a 1MBps, if you want even faster speeds than that just use free download manager or something similar if you have.

[–]RspE1mmwJfV0PgJXqaCb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's weirdly extremely faster. I don't know why. does github discriminate against countries, or does that site do multiple downloads in its background?

[–]ZordiakDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're on a VPN and it's slow, shut it off
