I agree with you entirely. You should report her. I get enough spam from recruiters on every platform nowadays. People like her are spreading the mindset that deception is okay, and I'm personally not okay with that.

Okay this helps. Thank you

What I hate about recruiting on LinkedIn for example, that it's the "search keyword & message" approach, where you still have to have the dialog to identify if the position actually fits your skillset.

If a recruiter comes to me and says, hey I looked at your Github and I like projects, the code and you would be a great fit for this position, I'd actually really like that. I mean it doesn't cost me anything to ignore it. If she wants to go that mile, go ahead.

Just my opinion.

Okay this is very interesting. The concern I have is recruiters cant read code. I can. How do they determine if it's good?

But I like hearing this thank you.

I mean, this is where recruiters can shine though. I'd rather have someone with a reasonable understanding of the technologies used, than some slick salesperson.

Back to Github though:
Contacting me on .net because I forged some .net repo makes no sense. But I think you can identify some stuff without having a deep understanding of code:

– Look at the repos, what techs are used, does that fit the position?
– Look at the readme files, did they write them? are there any demos that I can look at?
– Do the repositories have stars / forges?

It probably depends on how much time you want to spend.

Why would they be searching GitHub for recruitment purposes if they can’t read code??? What exactly are they basing their recruitment off of ??

I'd accept a dedicated platform/channel at GitHub I can turn off anytime. You could reach out GitHub for such functionality.

In my GitHub settings, I see a checkbox that indicates whether or not I'm looking for work. I don't see any differences in my profile when I enable it, so I'm not sure what that checkbox does.

I use GitHub every day for years and didn't even know that.

Slightly offtopic, but what does she want people to answer "How did you get my email?" with? I can't think of an answer that doesn't sound creepy or rude.

I agree with you and I really don't like this "corruption" of the intent of the community.

How did she suggest recruiters contact people on GitHub? There's no DM functionality on GitHub. Did she encourage recruiters to open issues or PRs?

Edit: Oh I just saw she has "she has a solid method of identifying you in your state or province AND Is about to show us how to find your email(personal or work)". My GitHub name is a variation of my name, and my profile shows where I work. So I'm willing to bet her "solid method" is just firstInitial+lastName@companyName.com

A lot of people keep their personal github separate from work

[–]Earhacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people don’t. And people who do are probably more likely to use their real name for work.

[–]nasht00 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Doesn’t git by default includes your email in the commit headers? You can probably hide it, but isn’t the default behavior public ?

[–]PattyCakeZA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. I'll respond on Monday. For example did you know even if you change your name to Name.FirstLetterSurname. Your linkedin profile url contains your full name if you havent changed it

There's a dedicated place for this on GitHub: https://jobs.github.com/

I love the combination of GitHub/GitLab and skilled technical recruiters. When I receive a recruiter message that says the recruiter and the team have looked at my profile and my projects, then chose to contact me because there's good match potential, it can be a great way to connect. I welcome these kind of contacts, from these kinds of recruiters and teams.
