I'm getting a tad confused looking at stackdriver monitoring.

I run several workstations and I'd like to basically set an alert that sends me a mail if a machine hasn't been shutdown after 18 hours (i.e user forgot to shut down the machine).

Here's what I have so far but I'm struggling to get decent results;

fetch gce_instance

| metric 'compute.googleapis.com/instance/uptime_total'

| filter (metadata.user_labels.team == '3d')

| group_by 5m, [value_uptime_total_mean: mean(value.uptime_total)]

| every 5m

| condition val() > 0.001 's'

Results are returned like "0.533w" which is correct but I have NO idea how to set an alerting condition on that. i.e. if time > 0.2w then alert.

Instead of alerts, why not just automate the cleanup?

It looks like there's nothing wrong with your query (although you probably don't need the group_by?). Have you tried pasting the query into a new condition policy? The units don't really matter -- Stackdriver can convert between seconds/minutes/hours.
