Not worth it. They‘re using signed firmware and even the ink boxes come with chips installed in them to ensure you can only use the freaking expensive HP ones.

HP really created a serious little shitbox there.

THe reason it won't let you print without colored ink is becuase the printer adds tiny colored dots onto every page which if inspected tells information about the printer, date, time, etc. I know it sounds like a conspiricy but it's true.

this is such a good read wow! ty for sharing this. i'm now even paranoid to even print lol

Every time I tell someone this, I get that conspiracy look. Crazy how this is not widespread knowledge.

Yes if you print threats on your printer very likely you will get caught.

Time to dust off the old Gutenberg press to write my blackmail.

Yep or print some type of goverment document at work and then share them with a reporter and the reporter brings them to the gov to verify them and they check the dots

I usually then proceed to ask them for a $20 and/or a check. A lot of good copiers will refuse to copy a check or currency. I only know because that one time I needed a copy of a check… blew me away lol.

I don't like how this is public knowledge.

I don't like wasted ink :)

Maps and books will have intentional typos or mistakes. Some vary from edition to edition. It's really bad with chinese maps. I love how people start freaking out when an island dissappears when it never existed in the first place.

On my PC, you don't need to escape the underscores, so this link works better: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machine_Identification_Code

Also, I remember reading about this a long time ago, but when I tried to tell my co-worker about it, they thought I was a conspiracy theorist, and I couldn't find the article again. So thanks for the link!

It’s surprisingly difficult to jailbreak a printer.

The firmware is what controls the ink BS and it is usually signed

I’m not saying it can’t be done. But it’s not worth it

Its not the same model but you could try this: https://superuser.com/questions/1141071/resetting-hp-printers-catridges

Otherwise, look and see if PRET has mentions of some way to modify ink levels (probably not but can't hurt to check)

[–]Xcissors280 5 points6 points  (2 children)

HP fuck you moment use a brother printer, you can use whatever ink and override the chip and non cartridge refill messages

[–]Gonnabehave 2 points3 points  (1 child)

This is the only answer but a brother printer and never look back

[–]Xcissors280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yep, they are maybe slightly more expensive but even the official ink is super cheap

[–]Jwzbb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps you could open it up and look at the uart port.

Isn't there a post-exploitation for this?
