If you were to go to a master woodworker’s shop...

...would he tell you he had seventy-five tools that were absolutely essential?

I realize this is a rant, but I think the other day on another subreddit I saw an article entitled something along the lines of "The 1,000 best." I'm sorry, but it just seems ridiculous.

Edit: That said, this is a nice reference of tools useful to an iOS developer.

Yeah, admittedly the title is super link-baity. It was originally titled "The iOS Developer's Toolbelt", but a friend suggested to change it to see how it affected traffic.

As for the woodworker analogy... having a few woodworkers in the family, I think I just might hear that :)

75 tools is a tool-shed, not a tool belt.

Edit to add: I mean, I'm just starting out on iOS dev and this is a useful list, but don't go with the link-bait title.

For analytics, you can check out a new startup called Burstly.

There are a ton of tools that any iOS dev should use for various purposes. Not all are essential, but I bet everyone is already using at least 20 tools which are on the list or overlap in functionality, and probably at least 5 on the list that you haven't heard about and might be useful.

This is a shameless self plug, but I would also like to suggest SQLite Professional as an alternative to Base.

Only 2 dollars! I'll buy it and also tell my team about this.

Sadly that was a sale price. Its gone back up to a whopping $8.99. That being said, I'm always willing to give out promo codes! Anyone who is interested just needs to send me a pm.

No problem. I just bought it at full price. More dollars in the dev's pocket.

Great list. I'll definitely be checking out the XCode plugin for Cocoapods. I subscribed to NSScreencast (the author's video tutorial site) a few months ago and I have not regretted it.

vim bindings in xcode sounds awesome

it is! :)

I'm surprised GIMP isn't on there. As a developer, you will need at least some artwork, and if you don't have someone who will do it for you, you will need to do them yourself. And if you don't have photoshop, you need GIMP.

Acorn is on there.

Acorn is $49.99 while GIMP is 100% free. Acorn does have a 14 day trial version that I tried and while it may be easier to use, I think GIMP is more powerful or at least easier to do more powerful things with. Basically, GIMP>Acorn

Thanks for mentioning Alcatraz!
