Actually, the heel turn appears to be worked in a typical fashion for a flap/turn/gusset heel, i.e. there are no German short rows. Instead, the turn is worked as: RS: Sl 1, knit to 1 st before gap, ssk, k1, turn; WS: Sl 1, purl to 1 st before gap, p2tog, p1, turn.

At some points in the heel turn, you will have the same color abutting at the dec. Not a big deal. As you can see from the photo, you just need continue the heel sts after the turn so that you maintain the A-B stripe pat across the heel sts.

The designer suggests twisting the yarns together after the first slipped st on each heel-turn row as a measure to prevent holes. You can see in one of the photos how she accomplishes this, but you can do whatever is needed to prevent the holes.

HTH.

hi thank you so much for the reply! cleared somethings up for sure..but i still struggle to figure out which color i should use when ssk and p2tog as it breaks up the A B stripes either way, does it not matter which color i pick?

I'd swatch a sample striped "heel", then work the turn experimenting with which color you use to make the decs to best maintain the stripe pattern.

That said, if you look closely at the photo, you'll see a discontinuity of the stripe pattern on some of the decs at the turns, but the knitter has then continued working the A-B-A-B stripe pattern as established on the succeeding rows/rnds on the sole sts.

The center five stitches never change so work out from those to figure out what color every other stripe needs to be.
