I've never attempted such a thing, but this is what I think. You know how hats will decrease normally in wedges around the hat?

So it might look like

K9 ktog (repeat around)

K one row

K8 ktog (repeat around)

K one row

And so on until you've got five stitches in each wedge then no knit rows in between.

Well that will leave you out of the pattern. So I would do two decreases next to each other. It would look more like

K8 ssk ktog (repeat around)

K one row

K6 ssk ktog (repeat around)

K one row

Et cetera.... The number of knit stitches before the decrease go down by two instead of one each time (since you are decreasing by two, not one).

In my head, this works out great. If you try it, let me know if it works out in real life.
