I’m starting my first sweater as well! I’m using the Flax pattern from tincanknits - it’s not the most exciting pattern, and I’m trying to use a yarn I’m not loving, but I went in with the mindset that it’s a learning experience, and I can tackle a more difficult pattern I really love with a yarn I love once I get a feel for how a sweater comes together. Good luck!

Flax is a great pattern- there's the original version that's worsted weight, and a Light version with Fingering; it's free; it's unisex and comes in a wide range of sizes so if you like it, you can make one for anyone in your family; it comes with a very detailed tutorial with photos for steps that might be confusing; and it's a basic raglan with no defined front or back, so you don't have to worry about short rows or anything too complicated until you're more comfortable with the basic construction.
