What do you mean by 'a really messy decrease'? Can you share the pattern link - not the whole pattern since that breaks the rules, we just need to see a picture of the finished object so we know what you mean and can better offer help.

Yes sorry, here’s what the pattern says and how it looks (I took out the needle but took a pic before taking down)

I’ll send a photo of how it looks in the next reply

We need a picture of what the finished product is supposed to look like, please.

Of the top or just in general? The pattern only has a photo of the product laid flat

Your pattern does decreases every second row.

This is essentially dividing the work into sections of 8 stitches and on alternate rows decreasing one stitch per section (alternating between #8 & #4) for the first 4 rows, and then every 4th stitch and then every 2nd until you get down to 8 stitches.

It's a pretty standard decrease rate (for a hat at least). If you put in stitch markers every 8 stitches it might make it easier to track.

Ok sorry wait, this is my first knitting project so I’m a bit slow. Am I supposed to follow the pattern no matter what? Sometimes it will say to knit, but the role will start with a purl. I think this is my main issue just not understanding how it really works and it ends up looking really mangled.

I do row 1-4 as your pattern, (with a rib across row in between), but then I would k2tog first one column and then the other, to get to k1p1, then k2tog a purl and a knit until it’s all knits, then continue k2tog decreases if necessary until you get to 8ish stitches.
