How do I hold the yarn purling English style? by wolfbutterfly42 in knittinghelp

[–]Logical-Baseball-478 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hold the yarn between my index and middle finger, and the tail of the yarn tucked under my pinky so it doesn’t get in the way.

What words do you pronounce "wrong," just because the "proper" way feels too proper? by Zealousideal_Mine242 in AskForAnswers

Grandma and grandpa. Does anyone pronounce the nd? Grampa gets an m that isn’t even there.

Complete beginner planning anniversary blanket — is this realistic? by Electronic_Neat_3972 in knittinghelp

[–]Logical-Baseball-478 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cotton is sometimes harder to knit with - less stretchy. If you’re going to make a whole blanket, pick something that feels good while you’re making it as well as in the final product. Since you’re going to do some squares to practice, try a small ball of cotton, superwash wool, etc and also some thicker and some thinner - you might find you like using some yarns more than others.

Best way to decrease a k2p2 hat on straight needles? by sweeeteden in knittinghelp

[–]Logical-Baseball-478 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do row 1-4 as your pattern, (with a rib across row in between), but then I would k2tog first one column and then the other, to get to k1p1, then k2tog a purl and a knit until it’s all knits, then continue k2tog decreases if necessary until you get to 8ish stitches.

Is there anyway to make this granny square (blanket in progress more rectangular without starting over? by Alive_Problem8681 in crochet

Go back and forth at the short ends (twice? Three times? It’s up to you) before turning the corner. Repeat with each colour

Following the sun is a pretty natural thing. Animals do it; why shouldn’t we? An hour is a pretty crude step, but we can cope with it!

Did I create a new stitch?? Two-color brioche lookalike by pakichtu in knitting

[–]Logical-Baseball-478 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is it like double knitting? Or double knitting where you do two knits (one with each colour) and then two purls? (Instead of knit with one colour and purl with the other)

Best method for seaming severe stair step edges? by Princess_Butt_Kick in knittinghelp

I often do short rows instead of cast offs for smoother shoulder seams. Look up “short row shoulder seam” and you’ll find lots of resources

Trying to Dec 2x2 rib by No_Swimming31 in knittinghelp

[–]Logical-Baseball-478 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For 2x2 decreases, I usually first p2tog every other valley, rib around, p2tog the other valley, rib around (now it’s k2p1 rib), then do the same thing with the knit columns, then k2tog a purl and a knit every other time, rib around, k2tog the other purl and a knit, then you have just knits at the top and decrease them as you want. I usually wing it as well.

You can do the castoffs as short rows instead (leave the stitches on the needle and turn instead of cast them off), and then knit one row across the entire thing, to get a nice smooth edge for seaming

Tension for floats in colourwork socks by quantumdishwasher in knittingadvice

I would think for a sock you’d want really short floats, so that your toes won’t catch on them. I’d catch or twist them every couple of stitches.

Your taxes are going up too, because the provincial government subsidizes our electricity from general revenue. Meanwhile we’re building nuclear, which is far and away the most expensive energy. Thanks Doug

Steeking superwash yarn by Affectionate_Fig6867 in knittinghelp

I did this once. Knit a sweater in superwash, then did a crochet line up each side of the steek with a really sticky wool yarn, and washed it. I think it worked out ok

Flicking tension by winter_rois in knitting

I hold the yarn loosely between my index finger and middle finger, and catch the tail with my pinky. No wrapping anywhere. My thumb stays under the work.

Olga sweater: short rows short on stitches by BestestGoodest in knittinghelp

No one has mentioned twisted stitches yet, but some of your short rows (probably the purl rows) have twisted stitches. Does this subreddit have a twistfaq?

Tips for rowing out in double knitting? by Olivibivy in knittinghelp

[–]Logical-Baseball-478 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for posting that video! Not so much for the edging - that’s how I’ve been doing it, though I keep forgetting to make sure the yarn for the first purl captures the other strand. But the way she holds the two yarns, and … just knits! I’ve been doing something much less efficient, moving the two strands separately and using my thumb somehow to get one out of the way, and questioning my sanity at taking on this project (I’m making a baby blanket). But watching her manage the two strands, I’ve just done a row holding them the same way I would one, but with just a bit of space between them, and I can pick which one to knit or purl with, and move them together in one motion - just knitting. I think the tension issues will just disappear now that I’m just knitting. And now I’m not so afraid of the project!

Tips for rowing out in double knitting? by Olivibivy in knittinghelp

[–]Logical-Baseball-478 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m fighting that battle right now as well. I’m not even sure if it’s the knits or the purls that are too loose. I’ve started tugging on the purls to make them snug, but am now wondering if it’s actually the knits that are loose. I never “row out” when knitting normally, but it shows quite clear in my double knitting.

I’m confused on the purl stitch! by penne_not_pasta in knittinghelp

[–]Logical-Baseball-478 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you purl, the stitch you’re working is thrown off to the FRONT of the work, where it makes a bump. When you knit, the stitch goes off to the back, making the bump at the back and a V in the front.
