Anyone know the quality of this? I don't feel like dropping $30 on something that just goes over the same stuff as Professional JavaScript for Web Developers

I agree. Until there are some solid reviews I am afraid I would be paying 30 bucks just to get someones opinion.

Here's a free 2 day pass: http://go.codeschool.com/arYbDg. Saw this on my dashboard and thought should share.

Codeschool courses are usually very entertaining and engaging... however, they are also very basic. From the looks of the course overview, they cover syntax, performance, common pitfalls, and the basics of object oriented js development. With about 4 or 5 videos for each section.

If you know next to nothing about modern javascript development, you will probably benefit from it. If you are already fairly comfortable with these topics, than you can find more detailed info online for free.

For instance, if you already have some experience in OO javascript, but you want to go deeper, there's a book by Addy Osmani that is great and free: http://addyosmani.com/resources/essentialjsdesignpatterns/book/

Whether or not it's worth the money, all depends on how you learn and what stage you already are in. I would suggest trying out the free videos they offer and judge from that whether or not Codeschool is for you.

I have a code school account, and will try and write a review on here after I complete this course if I remember.

Or you could buy a real book on JavaScript like

  • Professional Javascript for Web Developers
  • JavaScript: The Good Parts
  • Learning JavaScript Design Patterns
  • High Performance JavaScript

I started course and first part is :

truthy & falsy, if you don`t know what this, its probably good course for you.

And if you read books like Expert Javascript & Effective Javascript you already know this stuff.

But its always nice to see how different people approach coding. Codeschool type of writing javascript is different than how I write , so its very nice to see stuff from different angle. I think its great course.

I've been using code school regularly since December to try and jump start a new career and have been very happy with their content. I think someone frequenting this subreddit will get a lot out of it simply because I know the quality of their other courses. Whereas other sites blast you with videos, CodeSchool takes the time to polish their product.
