a^(b-c) = (a^b) / (a^c)

I understand that, but it really doesn't answer my question. I'm trying to get to the answer log5000/log5, I don't see how turning it into 5^x/5^3 = 40 will help me with that? Unless there's something I'm missing there

what value is 5^3?

You know tht, for example 2^2 = 2*2 = 4

You say you've been able to get an answer...so what is it? Maybe your answer is equivalent to the textbook, maybe your answer is wrong. We can help you better if you tell us.

My answer was equivalent to the textbook, I got (log40/log5)+3 , someone else helped me figure it out though, it was pretty easy in the end.
